Well, in fairness the Skyactiv is tuned in part for, and achieves, fuel economy; not so the mighty F20C.

And how much more did a 2000 S2000 cost compared to a 2000 NB Miata?

It is a great car, but IIRC, it was a price class higher than Miata, splitting the difference between the Miata and BMW Z3 or Z4.

A new S2000 today may have similarly more power and performance, but would probably cost in the neighborhood of $40K, where a well optioned Miata is $30K, and a Boxster starts around $50K.

For me, the question is: $30k for a new warrantied ND Club, or ~$20k for a 10-year-old, 20-60k mile AP2. For me the AP2 takes it by a mile.

If the NC were attractive to me, it might be a more interesting battle.

I suppose that depends on how long you plan on keeping it, and whether or not you want to start from zero miles, and order what you want, or take a chance on what cars happen to be on the market, and risk how the previous owner cared for it, or didn’t.

I have argued that more power would do the Miata good, (just as more power would do FRS/BRZ good, too) without doing it much of any harm, even if it cost a few lbs if at all necessary.

Also, the S2000 does weigh ~300lbs more (~2750lbs, where ND is reportedly around 2400), give or take.

I’d consider a flat-6 mid-engined Porsche Boxster S for that matter, and it has more power and torque than both, and is probably the better road car, as well as it’s sublime handling, and still weighs ~2900lbs for an S, or less for a base car with power stats closer to the 4-cylinder japanese cars.

You can buy a significant amount of Boxster S on the used market between 20-30K. A VERY nice 986, or even a pretty decent early 987.

Porsche is only a better choice if you can/want to cover the maintenance. The car you get will be better inside and out for sure though.
